Going to Poland

Yes! Yes tomorrow we're setting off to Poland. Although Jan is staying only over the weekend it should be great fun.
Sadly we will seperate for 1.5 week so I can do some orientation around the wedding, like trying dresses, looking at other weddings, and others. Jan needs to be in Holland for work. It will be lonely Xmas without my fiance.
But as of 31st Dec I will be back to Holland with my mum to enjoy it here.

Another gadget added

At least, another gadget will be added to my arsenal of phone thingummies. Reading through some newsgroups I notices another ultimate gadget. An infrared keyboard for my SonyEricsson p800. It's already the nicest phone in the world, but as with all PDA's I had writing on it is easy, but not too fast. So most of the times typing will be reduced to a minimum. But with this infrared (read wireless) keyboard it gets even more interesting. Just typing on a normal keyboard while taking notes on your phone. Cool! But unfortunately I have to wait another 2 days for it to arrive. Here's a link to the keyboard.

Bluetooth also works at home!

So basically I can sit on the couch and still go on the Internet. Geez, I love this stuff.
Also ordered another gadget: an infrared keyboard for my phone. Now I can really can start making notes on my phone during meetings!

Finding a music band for the wedding

We have been busy for a while together with my parents in Poland searching for a good band to play at our wedding.
This isn't easy as good bands are already resereved or don't have recordings available on internet.
After some difficulties we both agreed we like the cytrus band.
Have a look and evaluate yourself !!!!

Variomatic log

It's now official. Variomatic, my work, has its own weblog.Variomatic Weblog with on it, of course, work related posts and articles.

Pizza & flowers

How would you react when you receive a phonecall on Saturday afternoon from someone who asks you whether you have ordered pizza & flowers? And you didn't? Would you say 'Yes, I did!', or would you say 'nah, you've got the wrong number'. I did the latter, and received later a phonecall from a friend who wanted to surprise us with a present for Jola's birthday. I guess I spoiled a little of his fun :-) Anyhow, one day later the not-so-much surprise anymore was delivered to us and we had a lovely dinner, although flowers don't taste that nice :-).
Anyway, a nice surprise and a clumsy, but understandable reaction from me.

Finding Nemo

Childish? Going to a cartoon Disney movie is childish? Don't think so. After convincing Jola (after 'The Lion King' convinced that cartoons are not always Micky Mouse-like movies) and loosing some friends who couldn't be convinced about this, we went on Saturday evening to the movies and saw 'Finding Nemo'. And I must be honest... it's a great movie. Nice humor, nice animations, thin storyline and esp. a lot of fun to watch. Definitely a must have on DVD in a couple of months. For more info click here.

Trying wedding dresses

This was a great appointment I made wit my friend Ela to try wedding dresses.
Although we didn't buy anything yet we had enormous fun there.
Already trying a dress makes you feel like a princess. At covers we got helped by a nice lady Wil Sluis. And who knows we might get back there.

Being Ill

And yes, it happened. Seeing all kinds of people around me sniffing, coughing and speaking with low voices, yesterday I also got caught by the virus. All day I felt bad, headache, feeling of being distant, throatache. And today when I woke up I noticed that my voice was about 2 octaves lower than normal, I couldn't swallow anymore, my neckarea is completely painful, etc.. So I decided to stay at home today. Having a good sleep till 11:30 and now just sitting behind the tele, reading the newspaper and checking my emails from work. With some aspirin and some vitamine shots I hope I'm feeling better quickly.

Free Polish TV

And finally, the new gadget has arrived. A new satellite dish, an LNB and a digital receiver with inculded card. So on sunday it began. Installing the satellite on the roof, trying to find the Astra satellite and watching 100s of programs in DVD quality. But, unfortunately no Polish channels, and basically that was why we bought the thing. After some surfing on the internet, I found the following link: Free TV from Poland - LyngSat, which has an overview of available Polish channels. Only thing I had to do was to change the satellite again from 19,2 east to 13 east (whatever that means :-) ) and now we have 6 Polish programs on the Hotbird group of satellites.

Polish wedding site

This is an interesting wedding page in Polish.

First entry Jola

This is my 1st entry on the eyckenstein weblog. As an official weblog (on my business card) it's time to start some writings.

New born babies

Yep, I'm 33 and my girlfriend is 30. So around us our friends are having children or pregnant. And yes, when you visit someone in the hospital who just got twins it's cool and makes you think about your own future. Unfortunately, I was ill yesterday so we couldn't practice for the children when we went to bed :-) But here a picture of the lovely twins.

Poland and pool

On Jola's parents last day we decided to play some pool in town. Here, Jola in action, her mother , and her father. Quite an great evening again in which we had drinks, fun and competition (although not so much :-) ).

Birthday Jola

Pictures will follow, but on 9 November Jola got 30 years young :-) Waking up not too early after all our work, during breakfast we, Jola's parents and me, gave her her presents and sang song birthday songs. Later that day my parents joined in and we made some music, had some drinks and after that went together to a lovely Japanese restaurant, which was a new experience for the joined parents. A lovely day.

Parents

Jola's parents joined us on november 8 to help us with moving in the new house. Always a cool and nice experience. Together with my parents they helped us a lot with lifting heavy stuff, sewing curtains, and proper cleaning. I know that, except for my father, they will not read this log, but still I would like to thank all four of them for their help during this first week in our new house.

Getting married!

On the first day we got our house we decided to celebrate it in the evening in the new place with some champagne, and I thought this was the right moment to pop the question to Jola. And so I did, her eyes closed and me on my knees (how romantic)... asking her to marry me and offering an engagement ring. And?.... the answer was "YES". So from now on at home we are discussing rings, cars, locations, invitations, and of course... dresses. I'll keep you updated!

BTW It will probably happen on 7 August 2004 in Poland!

Moving part 1

It's been a little quiet on the log, but that's due to us getting our new house. From November 4th on we have the key and we've been painting and moving. On thursday 6th we already stayed at our new home and it feels good :-) Pictures of the house will follow in a later posting.

New gadget has arrived

Today, my new gadget has arrived. A flash light for my mobile phone :-) Now, there are no more gadgets I can dream of.Sony Ericsson MPF-10 Mobile Flash - eXpansys Nederland. And yes, there is a difference!

Saarburg Report

As you could have seen earlier, we've been to Saarburg in Germany to visit my auntie and uncle. And we had a lovely time there! We arrived on saturday afternoon and had some talk and drinks there with my auntie Edith and one of their daughters Barbara.
On Sunday we went for a walk in the woods. Later we went into town with auntie Edith and uncle John. And visited the famous Saarburg ruins.
Later that evening we had some drinks and some music.
Unfortunately, something went wrong with our digital cam on the last day, so here is a verbal report. On monday we went to Trier, one of the oldest cities of Germany and did a grand tour their with our lovely guide, aunt Edith. We saw old Roman structures like the Basilika, the Imperial Baths, the cathedral and the Porta Nigra.
After that we had a lovely lunch, did some shopping and went home.
In short, a lovely weekend and we're going to do it again (also to make the pics again!).

Daniƫl dat ben ik

Yes, indeed, my whole family gets on the net now! This is the personal webpage of my oldest nephew Daniƫl. Take a look and leave a message for him in the "Gastenboek".

JA, mijn neefje zit op het internet. Heb er niet zoveel mee te doen gehad, maar het geeft me toch een "Oom Jan leert zijn neefje schaken gevoel". Mijn neef treedt in mijn voetsporen!!!!! Sunday and work...

It's sunday and after a nice breakfase I went to the office to get some work done. I have two goals today at work. Playing and planning. The playing part is of course the most fun, the planning thing an absolute necessity.
Right now I'm playing, I´m tweaking a prototype website so that it will work tomorrow at an external presentation. It's quite cool, I learn things about iframes, etc..

The planning thing I'll do later or at home. Guess with some air now of other projects, I can finally start doing again what I'm hired for... making this company a smooth machine.

No stats on www.eyckenstein.com

Received an email from Checkstat.nl that the content of my site was the content of a business and so I am not entitled any more to their free stats. Guess the design worked, only I don't work with Eyckenstein (although Jola has ordered business cards:-) ). Have to look for another statistics provider.

Long time since last posting

So what have you been doing Jan?

Basically, working.

Jola is on a short holiday to her parents and I have been alone this week :-(

So, what do you do when you're alone? You make plans, plans for having dinner with long time not seen friends and some time for watching some DVDs for the 3rd or 4th time.

And what happened really? Work occupied all my time? Even in the evenings, and even last night. Timing-wise, it couldn't have been better. Jola away and I work.

But after one long day of working on thursday (from 9 am to 4.30 am) I am looking forward to the weekend (where as it looks like I'm going to work). To make this company a huge success, one sometimes has to sacrifice. But in this case, I'm more than willing to do that, sleeping I can always do when I'm 75 or so.

Russian Circus

So this evening we went to the circus. For me it was a mighty long time ago, I think I was about 8 and went with my parents. For Jola, it was a little bit shorter ago. In my memory the circus was much bigger then, but I also could have grown.
Was it nice? Yes, but also too short.
So what did we see?
Of course, some acrobats. And as I already foresaw I, Jan, was drawn out of the public to perform together with the clown, some magicians and some wild animals. Highlight for Jola and me were the motorbikers. They drove around in a very small, iron globe at a very high speed. They started with only one, which was already impressive, but they ended driving with four of them in this small globe (scary). Here, some action.

So again we had a nice evening, although it was too short and not as big as I imagined.

Birthday & last summer day

On Sunday we celebrated my moms birthday. All the family was present including my uncle and aunt. I think it was about 27 degrees which is incredible this late in the year. Here, my brother in law Henk probably eating. And here, my father attempting to play darts. Jola enjoying the sun and Henk attempting a idiot-look-alike contest. My sister, Anna, looking into the scores, and Rebecca her daughter looking from the side and wondering what these grownups are doing, and Thyrsa who keeps the scores.

So you can see we had a lovely day with lovely weather and company.

Bloemendaal

After our shopping we went to Bloemendaal where we relaxed a little at one of the beach pavillions. Lucky us... it was their last open day so they gave a huge party with free food and drinks. Here some pics. pic1, pic2, pic3

Saturday... buying other stuff day

And the quest for new stuff for the new house continues. On Saturday we drove to the lovely town of Alkmaar where my nephew works in a great shop where they sell stuff with little box damage.
So this is the first thing we bought (for a much lower price). My dream came true, we own a huge 42 inch plasma tv!

After that it was time for a lovely American fridge. A nice fridge with crushed ice and icecubes :-)

Friday evening... buying furniture day!

And again on friday evening we went for furniture. This time to Wormerveer... to Morres Meubelen. A huge furniture shop with nice and less nice things.

It already started nice, we were welcomed by the Morres people as were we special guests. Happened today to be the day that they introduced their new catalogue and invited some special customers to visit them. Not knowing this all and never been there before we got free drinks and snacks on the way.

And we succeeded!!!! After walking around a while we saw these
lovely chairs that we bought. It's special ones... they're made out of bananaleaves!

And then we found our further furniture. A cupboard for glasses, a nice a low cupboard/dressoir, and a lovely low table.

Now we have to wait another 12 weeks and it will be in our new living room together with the couch we bought already.

We started to decorate our new house now (even on paper) and it starts to get really exciting.

My accident on tuesday evening

And then suddenly something happens and you forget to write about it on your weblog. I guess I still don't have the automatism to work with it the way I should. And also, something happens, I have my camphone with me and forgot to take pictures.

But here is the story, on tuesday at 19:00 hrs I step in my Seat Leon and aim for home. At the first t-crossing I encounter (coming from the opposite direction!) I see a .motorbike coming from the left with a girl and a boy on it. Without wearing helmets. The moment I cross them, I see that she is not able to control the bike and instead of making a turn she just drives straight ahead and bumps into my car.

After that, of course, I stop the car and she that she is lying on the floor, trembling and not being conscious. Another girl/witness from the car behind the motorbike stops and gives her first aid. I call 112 and call for an .ambulance and the .police.
After about five minutes they arrive. I guess when you're waiting in such a situation it always looks to last longer, but I think it was five minutes. And then the hassle begins.

First, the boy says he was driving the bike and that they were wearing helmets, which indeed were lying on the motorbike being brought there by a friend of them some few minutes after the accident. Looking at her injuries, he was quite unhurt, the police wonders why the helmets are undamaged and soon he confesses that they were helmless. Soon after that he also confessed that the girl was driving.

Why this? Well, she had no driver's license!!!!!

So what really happenend? The girl had asked her boyfriend whether it was possible to once ride his motorbike. He said yes, but wanted to choose a quiet location (our industrial area). She was just for about 1 minutes on the motorbike when she had to make her first turn and brake. And then she probably got confused. She forgot to steer and instead of breaking I think she gave some extra power to the bike with as a result an uncontrollable motorbike flying over the t-crossing in my car.

After that we filled in some papers, and I had to go to a garage to get a replacement car, because the rear side of my car was really damaged. Rear window broken, rear door completely damaged, rear of the car enormous scratches & rear wheel damaged. Will take some time to repair I guess (if they repair it) and in the mean time I drive this one.

The story continues...

Money & car gone whilst on the loo

In Dutch, but still a nice article about a poor guy who needed to go to the loo on a German highway. The weekend

And so what did we do the rest of this weekend?
First on saturday we went to MediaMarkt in Amsterdam and looked for nice huge plasma tvs.
After that Villa Arena was the one. Where we saw a lot of nice furniture and especially a lot of nice ideas.

Later that evening we went to my parents in Valburg and there we had a lot of fun with my parents and my uncle and aunt. Here on the picture Jola and my uncle Piet.

As is a tradition with our family after some beer and/or wine, it was time to play some golden oldies on the guitar.

And on sunday we had a lovely weather, we had a nice walk and later in the afternoon we played some darts in my parents'garden.

So in the end, we had a nice, relaxed weekend with drinks, furniture shops, plasma tvs, fun, music and more.

We bought our 1st furniture

Today we went for SeatsandSofas to look for a couch. What a dissapointment. But luckily they had neighbours, Poppeliers, and there we found this lovely couch and we bought it (mind you the price you see is not the price we paid unfortunately). And now in ten weeks time we can sit on our lovely new couch.

02:00 AM Sep. 12, 2003 PT Smokers trying to quit may be able to throw out their nicotine patches if a British doctor's plan to use blinking dots to quell cravings works out as hoped. Dr. Jon May says certain visual tasks reduce cravings by distracting the brain. His team is working on a handheld computer program that displays a grid of dots that flicker randomly about 1,000 times per second. The blinking dots make "it harder to see (the cigarette) in your mind," May said, so the brain can't create images that strengthen the craving. Cravings last a while, he said, so "if you can get it early -- within 15 seconds -- you may have broken the cycle." source

Shopping in Poland

Every time we go to Poland we have to shop here at Auchan. A big, very big supermarket where we can buy everything really cheap compared to Dutch ones.

KUDOWA ZDROJ

One of the places we visited in Poland. A lovely spa resort. KUDOWA ZDROJ

Days in Poland

Been away for a little while... but here a brief update of what happened.
On thursday we had a funeral in Poland, this meant we drove wednesday night to Poland and it took us only 7,5 hours for 900 kilometers.
On friday I did some work and the rest of the family went shopping, hair dresser etc.
On Saturday we had a lovely walk in the Stone mountains of Poland (hope to find nice pictures soon).
And on Sunday we had to go back again.
In other words, a nice short holiday, but tiresome.

Going to Poland

Tonight we are leaving for Poland due to sad family circumstances. My girlfriend's grandfather died last friday and we go to the funeral.
Guess what I try to say is... no postings the next days (as if anyone would read them :-) )

Daddy Day Care

We went to the movies yesterday evening to see Daddy Day Care with Eddy Murphy. Somewhere in the papers I had read that this was the old Eddy again, but no... this guy just lost his funnyness over the years. Spent most of the time in the cinema playing with my mobile phone (of course in silent mode).

Major breaking news

We bought the house!!!!!!! The one we wanted (see an earlier post) and we can enter the place 3rd of November. So guess we now have to visit places like this more often. Makes me happy :-(

nu.nl/algemeen nieuws | Motorrijder raast met 253 kilometer per uur politie voorbij

A dutch guy on a motor wanted to try his new motor on the highway. The police caught him with a top speed of 253 km/h. He had to give his driver's licence and new motor immediately to the police. Why didn't he try it in Germany! Sucker

Bidding....

As expected the first bid was turned down. I guess we're now in the bidding game, but it's fun. Am going to make new offer on Monday.

Quest for houses continued

Tomorrow, we visited this house for the second time. We're really enthousiastic about it and just made our first offer. Am curious about first reaction.

GPRS working on P800

What a story. Tried everything yesterday to get GPRS working on my p800, but nothing worked. Today called with Debitel again and their GPRS helpdesk would help me further. After one hour I received a call that my p800 was not supported by Vodafone Live where yesterday they said it was supported.
I, friendly, asked to test it themselves with a p800 and this guy promised he would do so and call me back.
Four hours later still no reaction. But since I really want it to work I went to the Sony Ericsson website where they have a WAP-configurator. Filling in the fields and selecting GPRS for it, made them send an SMS to me with the right settings, and guess what? It works and I'm a happy man again.

Only thing is that it took more effort of me than expected and that I thank SonyEricsson for their help on the website (in contrary to Debitel). Although putting it into a wap-configurator i.s.o. a GPRS configurator was some puzzle for me.

Mobile danger

Do we all have to get scared now? Pitty that they didn't say which brand and type :-)nu.nl/algemeen nieuws | Mobieltje ontploft in gezicht vrouw

Quest for a house

Going to look at a house again. This is not my favourite, but still have to see it myself before I can judge!klik hier

ClubP800

For my mobile phone this is a good place to find news, tips and other interesting things. Already looked there how to configure my p800 when it has GPRS later this day.

GPRS continues...

Just went to a Debitel seller (BCC) and upgraded my subscription to GPRS. I am a little worried though, because I was their first customer who wanted this and we had to fill in a form which was everything but clear. But who knows, I still have (some) hopes that it will go right in one time.

A dream comes true

In may of this year I bought a great new phone (SonyEricsson p800) and since then I am very happy with this one.
I had only one disadvantage, my provider Debitel provided no GPRS, which I thought was one of the big plusses of my phone.
But now I'm happy, Debitel offers GPRS also through Vodafone and from tomorrow on I will have it! debitel Nederland B.V. - particulier - gprs - Vodafone live

Eyckenstein.com up and running again

Yesterday's trouble with eyckenstein.com are history. After pressing too much buttons at my hosting provider and this being published to the web too much, I now can finally say that the original settings are back and eyckenstein.com is on the air again.

Anti-virus virus

Guess the guy or girl who created this did it with good intentions but the results are the opposite.
Link is in Dutch!

It all looks so easy

But it's not!
After creating this weblog (which was quite easy) I had to change some settings at my hosting provider. I believe the settings are now right, but somehow the browser keeps looking for www.eyckenstein.com/weblog/weblog/weblog/weblog/weblog/weblog/weblog/weblog/weblog (click here)

I hope this is only temporary, because otherwise weblog fun is already over after 1 hour of experimenting.

Introduction

Who am I?
Just a short introduction...
I'm a thirty two years old guy from The Netherlands who works at an Internet company in Amsterdam.

I have a lovely girlfriend and we just started to live together.

Is there anything more you need to know?

No, Guess, you will know me better by reading this log.

Haunt for houses

And of course, I would like to be able to post some pictures along the way. But let's see how to do that. I start with pictures of houses I'm interested in buying.

So, we are looking for a new house. We, my girlfriend and I, now live in a one-room appartment in Hilversum, The Netherlands. Although it's cosey, it's far too small and we decided to look for something else.

But what a crap is there to be found...
Look at this for example, or this.

But in the end we found one we like. It's this one.

Weblog Eyckenstein

Another weblog on the Internet, but why?
Well, quite easy this one's mine and I can enter my thought, experiences and other things here.
Do I really believe that this will be a huge success?
No, I do it just for fun and to see whether I like this or not.
